5 simple steps to creating goals that actually work

If you're into Mel Brooks or even Steve Carrell you might be giggling right now thinking of the ridiculous nature of a spy who is socially awkward and ill equipped. Go on, have a giggle...

Ok now onto the real story here...

Last week we talked about the different between intentions and goals. If you missed that post, read that first

When we set intentions it's really easy to think of something that is just beyond our reach. We think of the things we want, but we don't really give much time or energy into what it will take to get there.

I want you to dream big, but I also want you to keep it real

That's why I present to you: S.M.A.R.T goals.
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Results-focused
Time-bound

What that means is that you will create a goal that is specific enough with an end date and a clear "I was here now I'm there" way to measure the progress.

Not only will this increase your chances of making it happen, but it allows you to take your intentions and break them down into little bite size action steps.

Let's use last week's example of opening a yoga studio. You've got your intention and you've written down all the things that need to happen in order for your yoga studio to come to life. One of the things on that list is to create a logo. How would we translate that into a S.M.A.R.T goal?

Well first we have to break down what it actually means to create a logo. What does that involve? Here is the first thing and more important thing I recommend before anyone jumps into creating a logo:

BRANDING!

Now this in and of itself is a big process, but we can still break it down to one S.M.A.R.T. goal to get you moving in the direction of your dreams. Here's what that could look like:

By the end of the month I will choose a brand expert to work with / take a course in branding.

So what makes this a S.M.A.R.T goal?

We have a time frame (by the end of the month), there is a specific action step (to work with a brand expert / take a course), this is measurable because you'll either do it or you won't (hopefully you do!), and it's attainable because if you can't afford a coach, there is a TON of free content and courses to take you through the process (I happen to be working on one for early 2018!)

If you achieve this S.M.A.R.T goal, you'll be ready to find and choose the right designer for your logo, which will then bring you closer to your intention of opening a yoga studio.

Is this making sense? Can you create a S.M.A.R.T. goal with last week's intention? I'd love to hear your thoughts and what your S.M.A.R.T. goal is in the comments below!
